WhatisaDatabase?
Whatisadatabase?Adatabaseisacollectionofrelateddataitems.Itisgenerallystoredonsecondarystoragedevicesthatallowrapiddirectaccesstoindividualdataitems.Redundancyisminimized;wherepossible,onlyasinglecopyifadataitemexists.Thedatabasemaybeusedbymanydifferentapplicationsystemsatonce,eliminatingtheneedforseparatesystemstomaintainthedataforeachapplication.Whenauserprograminquiresifaparticularitemisinthedatabase,adatabasemanagementsystem(DBMS)doestheactualsearching.Theuserdoesnotneedtobefamiliarwiththeformatinwhichthedataisstoredortheactualphysicallocationofthedata.
TheDBMSceratesthedatabase,keepsitup-to-date,andprovidesredayaccesstoauthorizeduser.Databasemanagementsystemsalsoprovideextensivesecuritymeasurestopreventunauthorizedaccess.Theymakeitconvenientforexpressingrelationshipbetweenrelateddataitemsandfacilitatethedesignofuserapplicationsystems.Theyprovidebackupandrecoverycapabilitiestopreventagainstlossordestructionofvitalinformation.Theyensuredatabaseintegrity,thatis,whatissupposedtobeinthedatabaseisthereandwhatisnotsupposedtobe.isn't.apersoncalledthedatabaseadministratordetermineswhomayaccessthedatabase,modifyit,addnewrelationships,andthelike.Thisisaveryimportantlifeline.Therealquestionindatabasemanagementsystemsishowtoorganizeinformationtoproviderapidanswerstothekindsofquestionsusersarelikelytoask.Thesamedataorganizeddifferentlycanyielddrama-tidallydifferentaccessspeeds.Therecommonwaysareusedtostructureadatabasetoindicatetherelationshipsamongthedataitems;thesearetherelationaldatabase,thehierarchicaldata-base,andthenetworkdatabase.
Hierarchical,Network,andRelationalDatabases(threeprincipallogicaldatabasemodels)
TheHierarchicalModelInahierarchicaldatabase,datarecordsarearrangedinastrictparentchildrelationship.Eachparentrecordmayhavemanychildren,buteachchildrecordhasexactlyoneparent.Figure3-1showsasimplehierarchicaldatabase,indicatingtherelationshipbetweenacustomerandtheordersithasplacedwithacompany.Searchingahierarchicaldatabaseisrapidandconvenientaslongasitissearchedfromthetopdown.IBM'sIMS(InformationManagementSystem)isthemostwidelyusedhierarchicalDBMS.HierarchicalDBMSarebestsuitedforproblemsthatrequirealimitednumberofstructureanswersthatcanbespecifiedinadvance.Oncedatarelationshipshavebeenspecified,theycannoteasilybechangedwithoutamajorprogrammingeffort.Thus,thehierarchicalmodelcannotrespondflexiblytochangingrequestsforinformation.
TheNetworkModelThenetworkdatabasemodelisbestatrepresentingmany-to-manyrelationshipamongdata.Inotherwords,a"child"canhavemorethanone"parent",asFigure3-2illustrates.ComputerAssociates'IDMSisanetworkDBMSforcomputermainframes.
